Disturbed’s Fans

After looking at the band’s songs, the best way to gauge reaction is to look at the response. The negative image of consumer-culture suggests that economic consumption occurs and no thought is produced. The web site song facts is set up to enable users the opportunity to discuss the songs they hear. In the entry for the song Believe, the songs themes are questioned, and also the religious faiths of the band. The sixth comment entry asks if the religion of the band is even important citing that it would not change the meaning or add to it. Post nine suggests that the song takes aim at the Christian religion, yet post seven says “I Believe he is stating that there it truth in all things. There is just one universal religion and we all have to find it for ourselves. No one is above another.” Post eight reflects that perhaps the song writer is between so many ideas that it is an honest reflection of his beliefs.[17] This is not the debate of people that are mindless consumers.

The fans have also created images of the band’s icons. In one such picture the artist has taken the cover of The Sickness and replicated it but has also included lyrics and other powerful sayings the band has. There is also fan work of the band’s mascot that keeps in the theme of being restrained by society only to break free.

In an interview Dan Donegan recalls a story where the band interacted with a fan.[18] In the incident the band was offered a bronze star from an American sergeant. The band was hesitant to accept it, as it is a high honor for valor. The Sergeant persisted saying that the music was a driving force for the troops under his command and that he never lost a soldier. The band accepted and offered to play a show. Could such a reaction be generated through people only mindlessly consuming or is there a deeper meaning?

Conclusion

Music has a large impact on everyday life. As the introduction has shown, it enables people to express ideals close to themselves. Religion, in abstract forms, is definitely found in the works of the group. The fans have made a clear connection to this and have clear responses. Thus, it should stand to the reason that the music of Disturbed will continue to contain new paradigms toward life in mirroring religion.
